Composting to Improve Soil Fertility for India

Welcome to Our Site for all the information you seek about all types of composting, with a bias toward India

Large Scale Compost Systems: The Main Types of Composting Systems are:-

Windrow or Static Pile Composting

This is a simple, and very popular large scale composting method which  comprises placing organic waste in long piles (windrows). Regular turning provides aeration to promote decomposit-ion, or alternatively the pile may be left undisturbed (static), if forced aeration (ASP) systems are used. Visit this Commercial Composting web site for more information.

Includes on-farm composting , by farmers for use on their own land.

Worm Composting (Vermiculture)

This is a very popular and increasingly common form of composting. It can be used both at large scale and small.

The compost quality produced from the worm casts is usually considered to be the very best, and as a result vermiculture compost commands the highest price premium of any of the compost types. Visit this India Centred Composting site for more information.

In-vessel Composting

Systems vary, but the material is contained in a controlled environment. Forced aeration is applied, and a closely controlled and more rapid breakdown of organic matter is achieved. System variants can include bays, containers, tunnels, halls, rotated drums etc, and are preferred where potentially infectious wastes are composted, and where a very high degree of odour reduction is needed. Visit this Commercial Composting web site for more information.

Composting Toilets

These provide hygienic toilets and according to choice of design or brand are not only odour free, but are useful both to the third world and the developed nations. In all applications they can provide a highly sustainable and environmentally acceptable method of providing toilet facilities.

In the developed nations the technique has recently been developed for use when travelling by holidaymakers. Click on links at the sides of the page for more information.

Anaerobic Digestion

This is a composting process, but as it is carried out in the absence of air, it is not usually referred to as composting. We have mentioned it here for completeness, however, we have not included any finder links on this site. other than to suggest this Anaerobic digestion Web Site.

Home or Garden Composting

Home and garden composting is the composting activity which all of those with gardens can, and proabably should participate in. Not only is this form of composting very environmentally sustainable as it recycles much needed nutrients back into the soil, it also saves money as it reduces the need for the addition of chemical fertilisers. A wide variety of links has been provided on this web site for this form of garden composting products.

Compost Tea

We have also included links to this compost product. Don’t drink it! Compost tea is produced by steeping water in the compost and provides many advantages.
